South Africa's rooftop solar boom has been a lifeline through years of load shedding. Millions of homes and businesses have gone solar, and the market has grown faster than almost anyone expected. But rapid growth has a downside: not every installation on South African roofs today meets the standard it should.
That gap is exactly what the South African Bureau of Standards (SABS) is closing with the release of SANS 10142-1:2026 (Edition 3.3), published in June 2026. For installers, distributors, and importers, this isn't a minor technical footnote - it's a new baseline for what's allowed to connect to the grid.
What Actually Changed
Edition 3.3 supersedes the previous 2024 edition (3.2) and, notably, adds a dedicated annex covering test reports for generating plants - the PV and battery installations that make up most small-scale embedded generation (SSEG) systems in the country.
A few of the practical changes worth knowing:
Stricter protection requirements.
DC-side isolation, surge protection device (SPD) specification, and earthing arrangements are all more tightly defined, aimed squarely at reducing the fire risk that comes with poorly specified DC systems.
Higher bar for grid-tie safety.
Anti-islanding performance - an inverter's ability to disconnect cleanly when the grid goes down - comes under closer scrutiny. It's a small technical detail with a big real-world purpose: keeping Eskom line workers safe when they're repairing a feeder that a rooftop system might otherwise keep energised.
More paperwork, for good reason.
Installers now need to hand over fuller design documentation and test reports before a system can be signed off and connected. Anything that falls short simply doesn't get approved.
A clearer certification chain.
Core components - inverters, batteries, modules - need recognised international certification (think IEC 62109 for inverters, IEC 61215 for modules) and have to line up with South Africa's own grid-tie rules under NRS 097-2-1. One without the other isn't enough anymore.
Short-Term Pain, Long-Term Gain
None of this is free. Installers will need to re-check their supply chains, and some jobs will cost a bit more to spec correctly. That's the honest part of the story.
But the upside is straightforward:
the standard is pushing the cheapest, least accountable products out of a market that's had very little quality control. For homeowners and businesses, that means a rooftop system stops being a gamble and starts being what it should have been all along - an asset built to run reliably for 25 years, not a liability sitting on the roof.
