Liberia Plans 15 MW/10 MWh Solar-Plus-Storage Project to Drive Renewable Energy Adoption

 

Liberia is taking proactive steps to drive renewable energy adoption, with plans to develop a 15 MW/10 MWh solar-plus-storage project by the end of 2022. This is part of the government's efforts to achieve universal access to electricity by 2030, and to reduce the country's heavy reliance on expensive, imported fossil fuels.

 

According to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), Liberia's cumulative installed PV capacity stood at just 3 MW at the end of 2022. This makes the proposed 15 MW project a significant milestone for Liberia's renewable energy journey, which aims to boost capacity and bring electricity to communities that are currently off-grid.

The project will be spearheaded by the Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC), in collaboration with the International Finance Corporation (IFC) and the African Development Bank Group (AfDB). It will be divided into two phases, with the first phase focusing on the installation of 5 MW of solar PV and 2.5 MWh of storage capacity. The second phase will involve the addition of an additional 10 MW of solar PV and 7.5 MWh of storage capacity, bringing the total capacity to 15 MW/10 MWh.

 

LEC said that both facilities will be connected to the Schieffelin substation situated on the Elwa Highway. This highway serves as a connection between Monrovia and Roberts International Airport. The Schieffelin substation will provide a reliable transmission network for the solar power generated, while the battery storage system will ensure uninterrupted power supply even during cloudy or rainy days.

 

The solar-plus-storage project is expected to provide significant benefits to Liberia, including increased energy access, improved energy reliability, and reduced greenhouse gas emissions. With around 80% of Liberia's population currently without access to electricity, the project is expected to make a significant impact on the lives of Liberians, particularly those in rural areas where electrification is scarce.
